Discontinuous phase transition in an open-ended Naming Game

چکیده
In this work we study on a 2-dimensional square lattice a recent version of the Naming Game, an agent-based model used for describing the emergence of linguistic structures. The system is open-ended and agents can invent new words all along the evolution of the game, picking them up from a pool characterised by a Gaussian distribution with standard deviation σ. The model displays a nonequilibrium phase transition at a critical point σc ≈ 25.6, which separates an absorbing consensus state from an active fragmented state where agents continuously exchange different words. The finite-size scaling analysis of our simulations strongly suggests that the phase transition is discontinuous. Phase-transition-like Behavior of Quantum Games
Abstract. The discontinuous dependence of the properties of a quantum game on its entanglement has been shown up to be very much like phase transitions viewed in the entanglement-payoff diagram [J. Du et al., Phys. Rev. Lett, 88, 137902 (2002)]. In this paper we investigate such phase-transition-like behavior of quantum games, by suggesting a method which would help to illuminate the origin of ...

متن کاملConventions spreading in open-ended systems
We introduce a simple open-ended model which describes the emergence of a shared vocabulary. The ordering transition towards consensus is generated only by an agreement mechanism. This interaction defines a finite and small number of states, despite each individual having the ability to invent an unlimited number of new words. The existence of a phase transition is studied, analyzing the conver...
متن کاملAiding categorization by grounding spoken words - an infant inspired approach to concept formation and language acquisition
Naming is a powerful cognitive tool that facilitates categorization by forming an association between words and their referents. There is evidence in child development literature that strong links exist between word-learning and concept formation. A growing view is also emerging that language is a cultural product acquired through social interactions. Inspired by these studies, this paper prese...
متن کاملAnalytic Treatment of Tipping Points for Social Consensus in Large Random Networks
We introduce a homogeneous pair approximation to the naming game (NG) model by deriving a six-dimensional Open Dynamics Engine (ODE) for the two-word naming game. Our ODE reveals the change in dynamical behavior of the naming game as a function of the average degree {k} of an uncorrelated network. This result is in good agreement with the numerical results. We also analyze the extended NG model...
